GPT vs Claude — which model to choose in 2026

Illustration: two model windows side by side, one highlighted

"GPT or Claude?" is the most common beginner question. And it's almost always answered with the wrong thing. People pull up benchmarks and argue over fractions of a percent. But the right answer depends not on a ranking — on WHAT exactly you're doing.

These are two strong language models: GPT from OpenAI and Claude from Anthropic. Both are good. But at different things. Let's lay it out — and at the end I'll say plainly who should pick which.

In short: each one's character

If we really compress it: Claude is more often praised for code, long context, and clean writing. GPT — for multimodality (images, voice), a broad ecosystem, and name recognition.

That's not a law, just an established reputation. On your specific task it can land differently — so below isn't faith, it's criteria.

Compared on what matters to a beginner

| Criterion | GPT (OpenAI) | Claude (Anthropic) | |-----------|--------------|--------------------| | Code and project work | Strong | Often a touch stronger, especially big edits | | Long text and documents | Good | Large window, holds context neatly | | Images, voice, video | Rich multimodality | Sees images; voice/video more modest | | Ecosystem and integrations | Very broad, everything targets it | Growing fast, but narrower | | Writing tone | Upbeat, all-purpose | Calm, less fluff | | Free tier | Yes | Yes | | Ease of getting started | Tons of tutorials and wrappers | Fewer, but plenty |

I'm deliberately leaving out version numbers: models update every couple of months, and any "X beats Y by N%" is stale by the next release. Look at a family's strengths, not today's ranking.

Who fits which

No hedging — here's the direct call:

  • Pick Claude if code and writing are at the center. You're building an app, refactoring a big project, working through a long document, or want an even tone without fluff. Paired with a code editor it's especially noticeable — we compared in Claude Code vs Cursor.
  • Pick GPT if you need multimodality and ecosystem. You work with images and voice, want ready-made integrations, or want the model with the most tutorials and wrappers written for it.
  • Use both if you can afford it. Many do: draft in one, check in the other. The models surface each other's weak spots, and the result comes out sturdier.

What about the reasoning versions?

Both have reasoning modes — the model thinks longer before a hard answer. That's a different axis from "GPT vs Claude": each family has both fast models and thinking ones. Heavy logic or math — turn on reasoning, whoever you're sitting with.

Which model is cheaper?

It depends on the version and task, not the brand. Both have cheap light models and pricey flagships. Compare by the price per token of the specific model under your load. And remember: picking a light model saves more than picking "a different brand."

So what should you choose in the end?

Don't guess — test. Take your real task (not an abstract benchmark) and run it on both in one evening. Half an hour of practice is more honest than any ranking online. The one that handled your job better is your answer.
